How it is calculated

Consumption in kWh = power in watts × hours ÷ 1,000. In use: power × hours of use × days of use. On standby: standby power × remaining hours. On days without use, the calculator counts 24 hours of standby.

Appliances with a thermostat, such as fridges or fan heaters, do not run continuously at full power. For these, the annual consumption on the energy label is more accurate.

Worked example: TV

A TV uses 120 W when it is on and runs for 4 hours a day; on standby it uses 1 W. That is 182.5 kWh a year, of which 7.3 kWh is standby. At 37 ct/kWh, this costs €67.53 a year.

  • Electricity costs per year: €67.53
  • Consumption per year: 182.5 kWh
  • Standby costs per year: €2.70

Frequently asked questions

Where can I find the power of an appliance?

On the rating plate, in the user manual or in the data sheet. A plug-in energy meter is more accurate.

Is it worth switching appliances off completely?

For single appliances, it is often only a few euros a year. But many appliances on standby together can cost much more. A switchable power strip helps.

How expensive is a fan heater?

A 2,000 W fan heater uses 2 kWh in one hour. At 37 ct/kWh, each hour costs around 74 cents. As permanent heating, this is very expensive.
