How it is calculated

Annual costs = annual consumption × unit price + 12 × standing charge per month. The average price is the result divided by consumption – it includes the standing charge and is therefore higher than the unit price.

For comparison, the calculator shows the 2026 average price according to BDEW: 37.0 ct/kWh for electricity (household using 3,500 kWh) and 11.93 ct/kWh for gas (single-family house using 20,000 kWh). With lower consumption, the standing charge has a bigger effect; a higher average price is then normal.

  • A new-customer bonus only reduces the costs of the first year. For a comparison, calculate it separately.
  • Make sure you do not mix gross and net prices. Private customers receive gross prices including 19% VAT.

Worked example: 2,500 kWh of electricity

A household uses 2,500 kWh of electricity. The tariff costs 33 ct/kWh and a standing charge of €13 a month. The unit price comes to €825, the standing charge to €156 – a total of €981 a year or €81.75 a month. The average price is 39.24 ct/kWh.

  • Costs per year: €981.00
  • Costs per month: €81.75
  • Your average price: 39.24 ct/kWh

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the unit price and the standing charge?

You pay the unit price for every kilowatt hour you use. You pay the standing charge regardless of consumption, for example for the meter and billing.

Where can I find my prices?

On your annual bill or in your contract. Look for gross prices (including VAT) and check whether the standing charge is given per month or per year.

Is a low unit price always cheaper?

Not always. With low consumption, a tariff with a higher unit price and a low standing charge can be cheaper. So always compare the annual costs.
