Consumption

Gas consumption calculator by living space

How much gas does a flat or house of your size need? The calculator estimates the annual consumption using the values of the Heizspiegel 2026 (heating benchmark) and assesses your own consumption.

How it is calculated

The Heizspiegel für Deutschland 2026 (heating benchmark for Germany, billing year 2025) gives typical consumption values for buildings heated with natural gas. The values include heating and hot water. This results in around 64 / 120 / 194 kWh per square metre of living space in a block of flats and 65 / 127 / 220 kWh in a single-family house (low / medium / high).

Estimated consumption = benchmark per square metre × living space. Costs = consumption × gas price.

  • If your hot water is heated electrically, your gas consumption is correspondingly lower.
  • A cold or mild winter noticeably changes the consumption in a given year.

Worked example: 70 m² flat

A 70 m² flat in a block of flats with a medium consumption level needs around 120 kWh per square metre according to the Heizspiegel, so about 8,400 kWh a year. At 11.9 ct/kWh, that is around €1,000 a year or €83 a month.

If the flat actually uses 9,800 kWh, that is 140 kWh per square metre – still in the medium range.

  • Estimated gas consumption: 8,400 kWh
  • Gas costs per year: €1,000
  • Assessment at 9,800 kWh: medium

Frequently asked questions

How much gas does a 70 m² flat use?

According to the Heizspiegel 2026, it is around 8,400 kWh a year at a medium consumption level, about 4,500 kWh if well insulated, and up to more than 13,000 kWh if not renovated.

My gas consumption is shown in cubic metres. How do I convert it?

Multiply the cubic metres by the calorific value (Brennwert) and the conversion factor (Zustandszahl) from your bill. Our calculator “Gas: m³ to kWh” does this for you.

What does “high” mean?

Your consumption is well above the medium value for comparable buildings. Causes can be poor insulation, an old heating system, missing hydraulic balancing or high room temperatures.
