Heat pump: electricity consumption and costs

How much electricity does a heat pump need in your house, and what does that cost compared with gas? Start with your current gas consumption or with your living space.

Your details

The fields are filled with example values. For an accurate result, enter the values from your bill.

In field tests, air-to-water heat pumps in existing buildings reached an average of around 3.1, ground-source heat pumps around 4.1.

Heizspiegel 2026: 26.2 ct/kWh.

How it is calculated

First, the calculator works out the heat demand: current gas consumption × efficiency of the heating, or living space × heat demand per m². The heat pump's electricity demand is heat demand ÷ seasonal performance factor.

The calculator works out the costs in each case as unit price × consumption + 12 × standing charge. Maintenance, the chimney sweep, subsidies and the purchase are not included.

  • The seasonal performance factor depends heavily on the flow temperature: the lower it is, the more efficiently the heat pump works.
  • Heat pumps have their own tariffs and reduced network charges (Netzentgelte) under § 14a EnWG.

Worked example: 18,000 kWh of gas

A house previously used 18,000 kWh of gas. At 90% efficiency, this equals 16,200 kWh of heat. A heat pump with a seasonal performance factor of 3.2 needs around 5,063 kWh of electricity for this. At 26.2 ct/kWh and a standing charge of €12 a month, this costs around €1,471 a year. The gas heating costs around €2,148 at 11 ct/kWh and a standing charge of €14 – around €677 more.

  • Heat pump electricity demand: 5,063 kWh
  • Heat pump costs per year: €1,471
  • Gas heating costs per year: €2,148

Frequently asked questions

What is the seasonal performance factor?

It shows how many kilowatt hours of heat the heat pump produces from one kilowatt hour of electricity, averaged over the year. A seasonal performance factor of 3 means: 1 kWh of electricity becomes 3 kWh of heat.

Do I need a separate meter?

For a heat pump tariff and reduced network charges, usually yes, or at least separate metering. We explain the options on the heat pump electricity page.

Is a heat pump always cheaper than gas?

Not automatically. What matters is the seasonal performance factor, the electricity price and the gas price. The calculator shows you at which values the result changes.
