Electric car: calculate charging costs

How much does your electric car cost in electricity per year? The calculator takes into account charging losses and different prices at home and at public charging points.

Your details

The fields are filled with example values. For an accurate result, enter the values from your bill.

In kWh according to the on-board computer, without charging losses.

ADAC measurements 2026: at a wallbox usually below 7 to 13%, at a household socket around 15%.

Unit price (Arbeitspreis) of your household or EV tariff.

The results are non-binding estimates for guidance only. What counts is your bill, your contract and your supplier's prices.

How it is calculated

Electricity demand = mileage ÷ 100 × consumption per 100 km × (1 + charging losses). The price is a mixed price made up of the share charged at home and the share charged at public charging points. Charging costs = electricity demand × mixed price.

You pay the standing charge (Grundpreis) of your household tariff anyway; it is not included here. For a separate EV tariff with its own meter, a standing charge is added.

  • A wallbox usually charges with lower losses than a household socket.
  • Since 2024, reduced network charges (Netzentgelte) under § 14a EnWG have applied to wallboxes above 4.2 kW.

Worked example: 12,000 km a year

An electric car is driven 12,000 km a year and uses 18 kWh per 100 km. With 10% charging losses, that is 2,376 kWh. If 80% is charged at home for 33 ct/kWh and 20% on the road for 59 ct/kWh, this costs around €908 a year – €7.56 per 100 km. A combustion car using 6.5 l per 100 km costs around €1,365 at €1.75 per litre.

  • Charging costs per year: €908
  • Costs per 100 km: €7.56
  • Difference compared with a combustion car: €457

Frequently asked questions

Is a separate EV tariff worthwhile?

Often yes, with high mileage and a wallbox, especially with reduced network charges under § 14a EnWG. We are happy to calculate this with your figures.

Why are charging losses important?

Some of the electricity is lost as heat during charging. You have to pay for the electricity that flows through the meter, not just for what reaches the battery.

Are maintenance and insurance included?

No. The calculator only compares energy costs. MB Finance is happy to advise you on car insurance.
