Balcony solar: solar power from your own balcony

A balcony solar system (Balkonkraftwerk), officially a plug-in solar device (Steckersolargerät), produces electricity for your own household. Since 2024, the rules have become much simpler. Here you can read what is allowed, how registration works, what tenants and flat owners should know and how much electricity you can realistically expect.

  • 800 VA and 2,000 Wp
  • Marktstammdatenregister
  • Tenants and owners (WEG)
  • Yield
  • Insurance

The most important rules since Solar Package I

With Solar Package I (Solarpaket I), simplified rules for plug-in solar devices have applied since 16 May 2024. They apply if all devices on your electricity meter together stay within these limits:

  • Inverter (Wechselrichter): no more than 800 VA (volt-amperes). This is the power that can flow into your home's electrical system.
  • Panels: no more than 2,000 Wp (watt peak) of panel output.
  • Adding up: all plug-in solar devices at the same connection point (Entnahmestelle) count together, even if they are connected one after the other. What counts is the highest power that can be set, not a reduced setting.
  • Payment: in the standard case, electricity that you do not use yourself goes into the grid without payment.

For devices with a normal Schuko plug, the product standard sets a lower limit of 960 Wp of panel output. You can read more about this in the section on plugs and safety.

Registration: only in the Marktstammdatenregister

For plug-in solar devices within the limits, you no longer need to register with the network operator (Netzbetreiber). The network operator gets the data from the Bundesnetzagentur's register.

  1. 01

    Create an account

Create a user account in the core energy market data register (Marktstammdatenregister, marktstammdatenregister.de) and confirm it by email.

  2. 02

    Register the device

Choose the simplified registration for a balcony solar system. You only need a few details: location, date of commissioning, panel output, inverter output and your meter number.

  3. 03

    Meet the deadline

Register the device within one month of commissioning (Inbetriebnahme).

  4. 04

    Register storage separately

You also register a battery storage system in the Marktstammdatenregister. According to the consumer advice centre (Verbraucherzentrale), a storage system must also still be registered with the network operator.

  5. 05

    Keep the confirmation

Save the confirmation of registration. It helps if the network operator or your insurer has questions.

Electricity meter: what applies until it is replaced

Electricity that flows into the grid must be measured. This requires a bidirectional meter (Zweirichtungszähler), for example a modern metering device (moderne Messeinrichtung), or a smart meter system (intelligentes Messsystem). The network operator must replace the meter without delay after registration. You do not need to place a separate order for this.

You may use the device before the meter is replaced. An old meter, such as a Ferraris meter with a rotating disc, may then run backwards for a transition period. This is tolerated until the meter is replaced. According to the Bundesnetzagentur, this usually takes a few months at most.

The legal price caps for metering point operation apply to the new meter. You can read the maximum price for a digital meter in our guide on smart meters.

Tenants and flat owners

Since October 2024, plug-in solar devices have had special protection in tenancy law and in the law on flat ownership. Tenants can demand that the landlord allows a plug-in solar device (§ 554 BGB). The landlord may only refuse if the change cannot reasonably be expected of them, even after taking your interests into account.

Flat owners can demand that the owners' association (Eigentümergemeinschaft) allows a plug-in solar device (§ 20 Abs. 2 WEG). The association decides by resolution how it is done, for example how it is fixed and what it looks like.

Ask for permission in writing before you buy. Describe the device, the location and how it will be fixed. This avoids misunderstandings.

Permission does not mean that any installation is allowed. Safety and fixing must be right. If there is a dispute, tenants' associations (Mietervereine) or the Verbraucherzentrale can help.

Plug, standard and safety

Since December 2025, DIN VDE V 0126-95 has been a separate product standard for plug-in solar devices without storage. It also sets out which plug is allowed.

Up to 960 Wp of panel output

  • Connection with a normal Schuko plug is possible
  • The device must protect against touching the plug pins, for example with a protective cover or an internal shut-off
  • Look for the standards: DIN VDE V 0126-95 or the DGS safety standard
  • Plug directly into a wall socket, not into a power strip

Over 960 Wp of panel output

  • A special energy plug connector (Energiesteckvorrichtung) is needed, for example a Wieland plug
  • A qualified electrician (Elektrofachkraft) installs the feed-in socket
  • The inverter stays limited to 800 VA
  • Some funding programmes require the Wieland plug even for smaller devices

How much electricity a balcony solar system produces

The yield depends heavily on direction, angle and shade. The values apply to a standard panel with 400 Wp at a location in Germany.

InstallationYield per panel per year
South, tilted at 30 degrees, no shadeabout 380 kWh (rule of thumb)
South, vertical on the balcony railing, no shadeabout 280 kWh (Verbraucherzentrale)
East, west or partly shadedmuch less

Vertical on a south-facing balcony: example from the Verbraucherzentrale. Tilted towards the south: our rule-of-thumb value of 0.95 kWh per Wp, as in the balcony solar calculator. As of 2026. With two panels facing the same way, the yield roughly doubles.

A realistic view of own use and savings

You can only save with the electricity you use yourself while the sun is shining. A balcony solar system mainly covers the base load (Grundlast), meaning the fridge, router and other devices that are always on. What you do not need at that moment goes into the grid without payment. You increase your own use if you run the washing machine or dishwasher during the day when the sun is shining.

In the Verbraucherzentrale's example, a 400 Wp panel mounted vertically on a south-facing balcony produces about 280 kWh a year. Of this, about 200 kWh replaces electricity from the grid. With an assumed unit price (Arbeitspreis) of 35 ct/kWh, that is about €70 a year.

According to the Verbraucherzentrale, you can usually earn back the purchase price within three to five years through lower electricity costs. A storage system increases your own use, but costs much more. It is more worthwhile with higher consumption and larger systems.

You pay no VAT (Umsatzsteuer) on purchase and installation. The zero VAT rate (Nullsteuersatz) under § 12 Abs. 3 UStG applies to plug-in solar devices.

Checklist: safe operation and insurance

  • Buy a device that states the standard, for example DIN VDE V 0126-95 or the DGS safety standard.
  • Get permission in writing from your landlord or the owners' association.
  • Fix the panels securely so that they do not fall down in a storm.
  • Plug directly into a suitable wall socket; do not use a power strip.
  • If you have doubts about the electrical installation, ask a qualified electrician.
  • Without surge protection, unplug the device during thunderstorms, ideally in the evening when it produces little electricity.
  • Register in the Marktstammdatenregister within one month.
  • Inform your contents insurance (Hausratversicherung) and liability insurance (Haftpflichtversicherung), and if it is mounted on the building, also your buildings insurance (Wohngebäudeversicherung). Keep the confirmation.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to register my balcony solar system with the network operator?

No, if your device stays within the limits of 800 VA and 2,000 Wp. You only register it in the Marktstammdatenregister, and the network operator gets the data from there. According to the Verbraucherzentrale, a battery storage system must still be registered with the network operator.

Do I get money for the electricity I feed into the grid?

Not in the standard case. After registration in the Marktstammdatenregister, the electricity is taken without payment. A regular feed-in tariff (Einspeisevergütung) is possible after a bidirectional meter has been installed, but then the simplified rules no longer apply.

Can my landlord forbid the balcony solar system?

Only in exceptional cases. Since October 2024, tenants can demand permission (§ 554 BGB). The landlord may only refuse if the change cannot reasonably be expected of them. You can agree with them on how it is fixed.

Do I need insurance?

There is no special compulsory insurance. According to the Verbraucherzentrale, the device can sometimes be included in contents, liability or buildings insurance at no extra cost. Tell your insurer about it. MB Finance can also advise you on contents and liability insurance.

Does a balcony solar system work during a power cut?

A standard device does not. The inverter switches off when the grid fails. According to the Verbraucherzentrale, some models with storage can continue to run in island mode (Inselbetrieb).
